About

Chris Ellis is an artist photographer based in Whitby, North Yorkshire. He grew up in Liverpool and for a while attended Trent Polytechnic, learning the basics of photography and darkroom skills. Chris has worked as a landscape gardener, a youth worker and a freelance designer. For many years, he ran a small, multimedia design agency specialising in work for museums, galleries and arts organisations.

His practice is based largely on a response to the natural environment and his personal interpretation and emotional response to the world and people around him. Using a variety of digital and old film cameras, lenses and formats – he develops, scans and prints his work – giving him a physical connection to both the process and outcome.

“Although I like to utilise mystery, inference and emotion in my work, I hope to retain the qualities that define photography and acknowledge the direct influence of light and the role of the lens in making images.”

Education: Art Foundation – Trent Polytechnic.
B.A. in Art & Drama – City of Liverpool College.
M.A. in Advanced Digital Design – Teesside University.
